Chapter 10 - A New Family

A year later, the harsh winter had faded into a brilliant, warm spring.

I sat on a picnic blanket in the local park, sipping iced tea. A few yards away, Chloe was laughing hysterically as she tried to fly a bright red kite. She had gained weight, her cheeks were rosy, and she hadn't had a single seizure in ten months.

Rachel sat beside me, cutting up strawberries into a plastic bowl.

“She’s getting so tall,” Rachel smiled, watching our girl run across the grass.

“She’s going to outgrow her summer clothes before June,” I agreed, leaning back on my elbows.

The aftermath of David’s destruction had left a strange, beautiful new dynamic in its wake. Rachel and I had formed a unique bond. We weren't just the biological mother and the ex-stepmother; we were a team. We shared custody in a way the courts had never seen before—not by legal mandate, but by choice.

Rachel had moved into a nice apartment just ten minutes from my house. I still helped Chloe with her math homework, and Rachel taught her how to paint. We spent holidays together. We had built a village of two fierce women to protect one incredible little girl.

Chloe let go of the kite string, running back to us and collapsing onto the blanket, out of breath and giggling.

“Mom, Sarah, did you see how high it went?” she beamed.

“I saw it, sweetie,” Rachel said, kissing her forehead.

I handed Chloe a bottle of water. She looked at me, her eyes bright and entirely free of fear.

“Thanks for saving me, Sarah,” Chloe whispered, leaning her head on my shoulder.

I wrapped my arm around her, looking out at the clear blue sky. The badge on my belt had given me the authority to stop a criminal, but the love in my heart had given me the strength to save a family.

“Always, Chloe,” I smiled. “Always.”
