Chapter 3 - The Financial Autopsy

Leaving Rachel by Chloe’s side with a police officer guarding the door, I drove straight to my office at the State Bureau of Healthcare Fraud. It was 2:00 AM, but I wasn't going to sleep. I was going to dismantle David’s life brick by brick.

I booted up my encrypted workstation and pulled every financial record tied to David’s Social Security number. For years, I had kept our finances entirely separate, a boundary David had constantly complained about. Now I knew why.

David’s "consulting firm" was a complete mirage. He was drowning in high-stakes offshore gambling debts. To stay afloat, he had been using Chloe’s medical needs as a cash cow. He exaggerated her symptoms to expensive out-of-network specialists, billed the insurance companies using my credentials to rubber-stamp the approvals, and routed the payout checks into a hidden LLC owned by Helen.

Helen was taking a thirty percent cut of her own granddaughter’s medical funds to pay for her country club memberships and designer handbags.

They weren't just stealing money. They were denying a fragile little girl the actual care she needed, keeping her sick enough to justify the claims, but neglected enough to maximize their profit margins.

I printed two hundred pages of wire transfers, forged prescriptions, and fraudulent claims. I didn't just have enough to divorce him. I had enough to bury him in a federal penitentiary. I picked up my desk phone and called my contact at the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division.

“Agent Miller,” I said when he picked up. “I have a multi-state wire fraud and medical neglect case. And the primary suspect is my husband.”
