Chapter 2 - The Biological Mother

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later. She sprinted through the ER doors, her clothes soaked from the winter rain, her eyes wild with panic.

When David saw her, his arrogant facade shattered into absolute rage. “Who called her?! She has no rights! Get her out of here!”

Rachel ignored him. She collapsed beside Chloe’s bed, burying her face in her daughter's damp hair, sobbing uncontrollably. Watching the raw, agonizing grief of a mother who had been forcibly separated from her child broke something inside me, and rebuilt it into pure steel.

Four years ago, David had told me Rachel was a drug addict who had abandoned them. He had painted himself as the tragic, heroic single father. But the fraud files told a different story.

“How did you find me?” Rachel whispered, looking up at me with tear-streaked cheeks. “David’s lawyers... they sent a restraining order to my old address. They said if I came near Chloe, I’d go to jail.”

“It was a fake court order, Rachel,” I said gently, kneeling beside her. “He forged a judge's signature. He’s been intercepting your letters. He created a fake address for you in the system so the courts and the hospital would think you were transient.”

“You’re insane!” David screamed, trying to push past the security guard who had arrived at the door. “She’s an unfit mother! I protected my daughter!”

“You bankrupted her,” I corrected, standing up to face him. “I ran the financials, David. You used your mother’s shell company to drain Rachel’s savings through bogus legal fees, forcing her into poverty so you could win custody by default. You didn't want Chloe. You wanted the child support and the disability trust fund her grandfather left her.”

Helen gasped, clutching her pearls. “Defamation! My son is a saint!”

“Your son is a felon,” I said, flashing a dark smile. “And so are you, Helen.”
