Chapter 7 - The Unlikely Alliance

Marcus aimed the suppressed pistol directly at Arthur's chest.
He demanded to know where Elena had hidden his two million dollars.
I stepped between Arthur and the gun, raising my hands in a calm, placating gesture.
I told Marcus that if he shot my lawyer, he would never see a single penny of his money again.
Marcus lowered the weapon slightly, intrigued by my complete lack of fear.
I explained that Elena had played him just as easily as she had played my foolish son.
She had taken his loan, framed Brandon for arson, and was currently preparing to flee the country with all the cash.
Marcus's smug expression darkened into a mask of pure, lethal fury.
He realized that he had been manipulated by a professional con artist.
I offered Marcus a dangerous, unprecedented deal.
I told him that if he helped me track down Elena, I would personally repay the two million dollars from my hidden trust.
Marcus stared at me for a long moment, evaluating the sincerity in my eyes.
He slowly lowered the gun and holstered it beneath his tailored jacket.
He agreed to the truce, stating that he had a contact at the private airfield who could track off-the-grid flights.
Just as we finalized our fragile alliance, police sirens began wailing outside the office building.
The authorities had tracked Brandon's location using the city's traffic cameras.
I looked at my son, who was crying like a helpless child in the corner of the room.
I told Marcus to take me to the airfield immediately, leaving Brandon behind to face the consequences of his actions.
As Marcus and I slipped out through the back service elevator, I heard the police violently breach the office doors.

My phone buzzed in my pocket with a text message from an unknown number.
The message read that I had left him behind, proving I was always a terrible mother.
