Chapter 1 - The Hidden Clause

Brandon and Jessica left without another word.
I stood in the hallway and listened to the heavy oak door click shut.
The silence of the house wrapped around me like a heavy blanket.
I walked back into the dining room and looked at the cream envelope resting near my wine glass.
For thirty years, my instinct had been to fix my son's messes before he even realized he had made them.

He wished he could choose a different mother.
I picked up the legal documents he had left behind.
My hands were completely steady as I slid the pages out of the envelope.
I expected to see a standard quitclaim deed transferring the property rights for a future transaction.

Brandon had not come to ask for my permission to start his business venture.
He had come to trick me into legally covering a crime he had already committed.
Attached to the back of the packet was a preliminary bank approval form.
It showed an immediate withdrawal of two million dollars against the total equity of my home.
