Chapter 6 - The Setup

I watched in absolute horror as the fire consumed the living room where Richard and I had shared so many memories.

Elena was deliberately destroying the house to erase all physical evidence of her forgeries.

Brandon fell to his knees, sobbing hysterically as he watched our family legacy turn to ashes.

I grabbed his collar and pulled him up, telling him that tears would not save us from a prison cell.

I knew that Elena would ensure the arson investigation pointed directly at my son.

We had to get back to the city and find her before she successfully boarded an international flight.

We rushed out of the motel and sped down the dark highway toward downtown San Francisco.

I called Arthur from my burner phone and told him to meet us at his secure office immediately.

When we arrived, Arthur was pacing the floor with a thick stack of legal documents in his hands.

He looked at Brandon with pure disgust, completely unwilling to hide his contempt.

Arthur revealed that the police had already found a gasoline canister in the trunk of Brandon's abandoned car.

Elena had planted the evidence perfectly, making it look like Brandon burned the house down to collect the insurance money.

An arrest warrant for my son had just been issued by the district attorney.

Brandon began to hyperventilate, begging me to use my influence to fix this massive mistake.

I looked at him with an icy calmness that terrified him more than the police warrant.

I reminded him that he had wished for a different mother, and now he was going to experience life without my protection.

I told Arthur to call the authorities and turn Brandon in.

Brandon screamed in betrayal as heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway toward the office.

The door was violently kicked open, but it was not the police who entered.

It was Marcus, holding a suppressed pistol and smiling like a hungry wolf.
