Chapter 7 - The Stepmother's Choice
Evelyn stood firmly in the narrow concrete hallway, her beautiful red dress now torn and covered in dirt.
She had clearly managed to violently escape police custody during the absolute chaos at the mansion.
"Step away from the vault, Arthur, or I will shoot you right here," Evelyn demanded with a shaking voice.
She looked past me and saw Marcus lying completely unconscious on the floor of the oxygen-deprived vault.
Evelyn did not show a single ounce of sympathy for the man she had planned to marry.
"He left me to take the fall for his crimes, so I am taking his money," she sneered fiercely.
I slowly raised my hands in surrender, completely blocking Ethan from her line of sight.
"You cannot possibly carry billions of dollars in bearer bonds out of here by yourself," I reasoned calmly.
Evelyn confidently pulled a heavy canvas duffel bag from her shoulder and threw it onto the floor.
"I only need enough to buy a new identity and disappear forever," she stated coldly.
I nodded slowly and carefully stepped aside, allowing her to enter the highly dangerous vault.
Evelyn rushed greedily toward the towering stacks of money, completely ignoring Marcus's lifeless body.
She began furiously stuffing thick stacks of bearer bonds into her large canvas bag.
I quietly pulled the heavy vault door completely shut, locking it firmly from the outside.
Evelyn screamed in pure, unadulterated rage and banged her fists violently against the thick glass window.
I permanently destroyed the electronic keypad with the heavy butt of my stolen handgun.
Evelyn and Marcus were now completely trapped inside the vault, entirely at the mercy of the approaching authorities.
I grabbed Ethan's small hand and we sprinted rapidly toward the underground parking garage.

We finally reached the cool night air, believing we had successfully escaped the nightmare.
A massive military helicopter suddenly descended from the sky, blowing heavy snow violently across the parking lot.
