Chapter 1 - The Empty Safe

The red and blue police lights finally faded away into the freezing winter night.
I stood alone in the massive foyer, holding my violently shivering grandson tightly against my chest.
Evelyn was currently sitting in the back of a squad car, but her terrifying words still echoed in my mind.
She had confidently claimed that my son-in-law, Marcus, told her Ethan was already supposed to be dead.
I quickly carried Ethan into the kitchen and wrapped his freezing bare feet in warm towels.
"You are completely safe now, little one," I promised him softly.
I left him sipping warm tea and walked cautiously toward Marcus's private home office.
The heavy steel door was wide open, and the incredibly expensive floor safe had been completely emptied.
Documents worth billions of dollars were missing, meaning Marcus had meticulously planned his sudden escape.
I walked over to his mahogany desk and picked up the official death certificate the detective had found.
It legally declared that Ethan Cole had tragically died three years ago from a severe respiratory illness.
If the government believed Ethan was buried in the local cemetery, Marcus could easily hide him from the world.
I immediately grabbed my car keys, knowing we could not stay in this compromised mansion for another minute.
We desperately needed to drive to my secluded hunting cabin in the distant mountains.
I turned around to walk back to the kitchen, but a dark shadow suddenly blocked the hallway.

A tall man in a black tactical suit was standing in my living room, aiming a suppressed pistol directly at my head.
"Marcus sincerely apologizes for the mess, but he wants the boy back," the assassin whispered coldly.
