Chapter 4 - The Corporate Shelter

I look down the street and see a sleek black vehicle gliding to a halt against the curb.

The back door swings open, and Daniel Pierce is sitting inside. I hesitate for only a second before climbing into the warm leather interior. The doors lock automatically, and the driver immediately speeds away from my neighborhood.

"Thank you," I whisper, clutching my backpack to my chest.

Daniel hands me a bottle of water and a warm blanket. "Your speech was brave, but it exposed you to very dangerous people," he says.

"My parents are just greedy," I reply, taking a sip of water.

Daniel shakes his head gravely. "Your father's logistics company is actually a front for a massive money laundering syndicate."

I choke on the water, coughing violently. "What?" I gasp.

"I offered you that scholarship because I have been investigating his firm for a year," Daniel explains. "I needed a legitimate reason to get close to your family without raising suspicion."

I feel a cold wave of betrayal wash over me. "So you just used me as a pawn to get to him?" I ask, my voice rising in anger.

"At first, yes," Daniel admits, looking deeply ashamed. "But then I saw your grades, your work ethic, and your absolute brilliance."

He opens a manila folder and hands me a stack of glossy photographs. They show my father meeting with known criminal figures at the shipping docks.

"Your viral video brought too much attention to him, Emma." "The syndicate is going to silence him, and they will likely come after you to tie up loose ends."

I stare at the photos, realizing my entire childhood was built on dirty money.

"Where are we going?" I ask, trembling.

"To my private estate," Daniel says. "It is the only place they cannot reach you."

Suddenly, the driver slams on the brakes, throwing us forward against our seatbelts. A massive tow truck has deliberately blocked the highway off-ramp, and three armed men are stepping out of the shadows.
