I arrive at the Stanford campus on a bright, sunny afternoon in late September. I unpack my bags in a beautiful dorm room overlooking the main quad, feeling a profound sense of peace.
My toxic family is gone, my future is entirely secure, and my education is finally beginning on my own terms. I smile as I hang my blue graduation cap on the wall, a reminder of the night I finally stood up for myself. Inside is a faded Polaroid photograph of me as a newborn baby, being held lovingly by Daniel Pierce. I turn the photograph over with trembling hands and read the dark ink scrawled across the back.
