Chapter 20 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Two days later, Liam and I are standing in an underground parking garage beneath the United States Capitol.

We bypass the corrupted FBI completely and arrange a meeting through Liam's highest-level journalistic contacts.

A sleek black government vehicle pulls up.

An older, stern-looking woman steps out, flanked by two Secret Service agents.

It is the Director of National Intelligence.

I do not say a word.

I simply unzip my backpack and hand her the unencrypted hard drives containing everything: The Board, the offshore accounts, the blackmail files on the Deputy Director of the FBI, and the remnants of Vanguard Holdings.

"This is the end of the Vanguard syndicate," I tell her firmly. "Make sure it burns."

Within forty-eight hours, the political landscape of Washington D.C. is completely shattered.

News networks run uninterrupted coverage as the Deputy Director of the FBI, multiple senators, and dozens of corporate executives are indicted on federal racketeering charges.

Evelyn Cross is found abandoned outside a police station, severely beaten and tied up, left there by Daniel's men as a gift to the authorities.

A month later, I walk into the same federal visitation room, but this time it is a maximum-security men's facility.

Daniel Pierce sits on the other side of the glass.

He looks confident, wearing his prison jumpsuit like it is a bespoke Italian suit.

He picks up the phone and smiles proudly.

"You played the game perfectly, Emma," Daniel says. "You cleared the board of my enemies.

When I get out of here, the empire will be waiting for us."

I pick up the receiver, looking at the man whose DNA runs through my veins, feeling absolutely nothing but pity.

"You are never getting out, Daniel," I reply coldly.

"I gave the DNI everything. Including the secret offshore accounts you held exclusively for yourself.

Your empire is gone. The money is seized."

Daniel's smug smile falters, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his eyes.

"You gave them my private accounts? You ruined our legacy!"

"It was never my legacy," I say, standing up.

"I kept the ten-million-dollar trust fund. It is legally mine, and completely clean.

I am using it to start a massive foundation for the victims of the Vanguard syndicate. Starting with Liam's family."

"Emma, you cannot do this!" Daniel shouts, banging his fist against the bulletproof glass, his billionaire composure finally shattering.

I hang up the phone, cutting off his voice permanently.

I walk out of the prison into the bright sunlight, breathing in the fresh, clean air.

For the first time in my entire life, I am completely free.
