Chapter 7 - The Blackout

Madison kept the deadly weapon leveled perfectly at my heart.
"Hand over the cedar box right now, you pathetic loser," Madison ordered with venom in her voice.
I slowly raised my hands, clutching the manila folder tightly against my chest.
"You are going to sell the patent to the cartel and run away with Ethan, aren't you?" I asked, stalling for time.
"Ethan and I are taking the money and leaving our idiot parents to deal with the syndicate's wrath," she admitted proudly.
I pressed the small button on my hidden earpiece twice, sending a silent signal to Silas outside.
"You always were too arrogant for your own good, Madison," I said calmly.
"Shut up and give me the box!" she screamed, stepping dangerously close to me.
Suddenly, the massive mansion plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Silas had successfully severed the main power line to the entire estate.
Panic erupted downstairs as the wealthy guests began screaming in the dark.
I immediately dropped to the carpet and rolled violently away from Madison's line of sight.
A suppressed gunshot coughed loudly, and a bullet shattered the mirror right where my head had been a second ago.
I crawled desperately behind a heavy oak dresser, holding my breath as Madison cursed in the dark.
"I am going to kill you, Claire!" she shrieked, firing blindly into the shadows.
Suddenly, the heavy bedroom door was kicked entirely open.
The emergency backup generators kicked in, flooding the room with dim, red emergency lighting.
Ethan was standing directly behind Madison, holding a heavy bronze statue he had grabbed from the hallway.
Madison turned around, her eyes widening in total shock as she saw her fiancé.
"Ethan, help me shoot her!" Madison yelled.
May you like
Ethan didn't say a single word.
He swung the heavy bronze statue brutally into the side of Madison's head, knocking her completely unconscious to the floor.
