Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Truth

My blood turned to absolute ice as I stared at the woman who was supposed to be my mother.
She had callously framed her own daughter for a massive, lethal financial crime just to save her own skin.
"Open the safe and give me the forged documents right now," I demanded, stepping aggressively toward her.
She scrambled to punch the code into the digital keypad, tears ruining her expensive makeup.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and she pulled out a thick manila folder filled with banking records.
I snatched the folder from her hands and quickly scanned the papers.
My signature had been flawlessly forged on dozens of offshore wire transfers.
But tucked at the very back of the folder was a sealed document bearing the logo of the county coroner.
I pulled it out and ripped the seal open.
It was an illegal, suppressed toxicologist report from Grandpa Arthur's autopsy.
The report clearly stated that his heart medication had been intentionally laced with a lethal dose of digitalis.
"You murdered him," I breathed out in pure, unadulterated horror.
"We had to do it!" my mother sobbed, dropping to her knees on the floor.
"He found out about the missing money and threatened to disown us completely."
A sudden, sharp click of a weapon being cocked echoed from the doorway of the bedroom.
I spun around to see my sister Madison standing there, wearing her red engagement dress.
She was holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest, and a twisted, cruel smile stretched across her face.
"Mom is always so terribly dramatic," Madison laughed, stepping fully into the room.

I looked down at her hand and saw the heavy gold biometric founder's ring gleaming on her index finger.
"I was the one who switched Grandpa's pills, Claire, because I was tired of waiting for my inheritance."
