Chapter 1 - The Master Ledger

The click of the heavy office door locking sounded unnaturally loud in the empty bank.

Manager Reeves stared at the cedar box on his desk as if it were a live explosive.

"Your grandfather didn't leave you a keepsake," he said, his voice trembling.

He reached out with shaking hands and slowly opened the brass latch.

Inside sat a heavy black metal card and a worn leather ledger.

I recognized the corporate logo stamped into the metal instantly.

It was the emblem of Vanguard Syndicate, the shadow corporation that owned half the real estate in the city.

"Arthur Hale was not just a retired real estate broker," Manager Reeves whispered.

"He was the sole founder of Vanguard, and this card gives you total control over billions in assets."

My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the dark metal.

My parents had always called Grandpa Arthur a stubborn old fool who wasted his potential.

They had kicked me out into the snow because they thought I was exactly like him.

"This ledger contains the records of every debt owed to the syndicate," Manager Reeves explained.

He flipped the book open to a page marked with a red ribbon.

I looked down and saw my father's name listed next to a debt of forty million dollars.

"Your father has been embezzling from Vanguard for years, completely unaware that his own father was the boss," he said.

My mind raced as I realized my family's entire life of luxury was built on stolen money.

"You have to hide this box right now," Manager Reeves warned, glancing nervously at the frosted glass window of his office.

I asked him why he was sweating so heavily in a cold room.

He slowly moved his hand away from a red panic button hidden under his desk.

"Because I just alerted the syndicate board that the missing heir has finally walked into my bank," he confessed.

Before I could even process his betrayal, three heavily armed men in black suits shattered the front glass doors of the bank lobby.
