Chapter 8 - The Hostage Exchange

My father demanded that I bring the original, physical property deed to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city.
He strictly ordered me to come completely alone, warning that any police presence would guarantee the medical examiner's execution.
David vehemently argued against the meeting, insisting that my father was luring me into a deadly trap.
I completely ignored my lawyer's advice, knowing I could not let an innocent man die for my ranch.
I grabbed the heavy, embossed property deed from my secure bank vault and drove toward the desolate industrial district.
I parked my truck outside the rusting warehouse and walked into the massive, dimly lit building.
My father was standing near the center of the concrete floor, holding a suppressed pistol in his right hand.
The medical examiner was tied to a metal chair, bruised and terrified, with duct tape covering his mouth.
I threw the thick legal folder containing the deed onto the concrete floor halfway between us.
My father smiled his arrogant smile, keeping the gun pointed at the hostage while he walked forward to retrieve the documents.
He picked up the folder, verified the signature, and laughed coldly at how easily I had surrendered my legacy.
He raised his weapon and pointed it directly at my chest, preparing to tie up his final loose end.
I did not flinch, because I knew exactly what David had been doing while I was driving to the warehouse.
The massive metal garage doors suddenly exploded inward as a heavily armored SWAT team breached the building from all sides.
My father dropped his weapon in sheer panic, realizing he had just been caught committing armed kidnapping on a live federal wiretap.

He was violently tackled to the concrete by three agents and locked in heavy steel handcuffs.
As they dragged him away, my father screamed that my mother had already taken the digital deed to the courthouse, and the oil company owned the ranch.
