Chapter 2 - The Heavy Machinery

I immediately scanned the forged document with my phone and sent it directly to David, my trusted JAG attorney.

David called me back before the email even had time to fully process in my outbox.

He instructed me to lock every gate on the ranch and arm the perimeter security system immediately.

He explained that a forged Power of Attorney meant my parents had not just been planning to list the property.

They had already used that document to execute a massive financial transaction behind my back.

David logged into the county's digital property records while I paced across my living room floor.

I heard him curse under his breath, something the highly disciplined military lawyer almost never did.

He told me my parents had used the forged document to take out a half-million-dollar cash advance against my land.

They had signed a predatory contract with a ruthless commercial developer who specialized in hostile takeovers.

The contract stipulated that if the property was not vacated within thirty days, the developer had the right to begin demolition.

I looked at the calendar on my kitchen wall and realized exactly what date it was.

The thirty-day deadline had officially expired at midnight last night.

A loud, deep rumbling sound suddenly vibrated through the floorboards of my house.

I ran to the front window and looked down the long gravel driveway leading to the main road.

Three massive, yellow bulldozers were parked directly outside my front gate.

A crew of men in hard hats were currently using heavy bolt cutters to destroy the thick steel chain I had just locked.
