Chapter 9 - The Collapse

I stared at the green text on the screen, my blood turning instantly to ice.
I slowly turned my head and looked through the thin, dusty blinds of the motel window.
The parking lot was completely filled with black, heavily armored SUVs.
Dozens of armed men in tactical gear were standing in the pouring rain, surrounding our room entirely.
Standing in the center of the armed guards was a tall, imposing man in a charcoal trench coat.
It was Victor Kaine.
He had tracked my digital footprint the moment I breached his offshore accounts.
Silas drew his weapon, checking the magazine with terrifying, calm precision.
He told me to stay low and get into the bathroom, promising to hold them off as long as he could.
I refused to hide behind him.
I grabbed the encrypted hard drive containing all of Victor's financial secrets and held it up.
I told Silas I was going to negotiate our way out of this trap.
I kicked the motel door open and stepped out onto the balcony, holding the hard drive over the concrete edge.
Victor Kaine looked up at me, his face a mask of absolute, unforgiving authority.
He ordered me to hand over the drive before his men reduced the motel to rubble.
I shouted back that if his men fired a single shot, I would drop the drive, and a dead-man switch would automatically send his entire operation to the FBI.
Victor raised his hand, halting his men immediately.
He respected leverage, and he knew I possessed the only thing capable of destroying his empire.
I demanded that he release my innocent father from federal prison, drop the hit order on my life, and disown Madison completely.
Victor laughed, a dark, echoing sound that sent a shiver down my spine.
He agreed to my terms instantly.
He admitted that Madison was a weak, pathetic disappointment, and he had no interest in protecting her anymore.
He pulled out his phone, made a single phone call, and told me my father's charges were officially dropped.
He demanded the hard drive in return.
I tossed the drive over the balcony.
Victor caught it effortlessly, tipped his hat to me, and ordered his men back into their vehicles.
The massive fleet of SUVs sped away into the night, leaving the motel parking lot completely empty.
I collapsed against the railing, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
I had done it.
I had outsmarted a cartel boss, cleared my father's name, and completely ruined Madison's life.
My toxic family was destroyed, and I was finally entirely free.
Silas walked out onto the balcony, lowering his weapon.
He placed a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder and smiled proudly.
He told me I was the most brilliant, ruthless woman he had ever met.
We packed our bags and drove back to his luxury penthouse in downtown Chicago to celebrate our absolute victory.

I walked into the lavish living room, feeling a profound sense of peace for the first time in my life.
I poured two glasses of expensive champagne, handing one to Silas.
