Chapter 3 - The First Consequence

Silas Vance was sitting across from me at a high-end steakhouse by noon the next day.
He was in his late thirties, wearing a tailored suit that cost more than my car.
His eyes were sharp, calculating, and completely devoid of warmth.
He reviewed the encrypted files I had brought him on a flash drive.
He told me the evidence was flawless and could easily put my father in federal prison for twenty years.
I told Silas I did not want my father in prison just yet.
I wanted him to suffer the exact same panic and helplessness he had inflicted on me for my entire life.
Silas leaned back in his leather chair, clearly amused by my absolute ruthlessness.
He agreed to take my case on contingency, promising to recover my stolen fifty thousand dollars with extreme interest.
In the meantime, Silas used his corporate connections to secure me a high-paying job as a data analyst at a major tech firm in the city.
I spent the next three weeks building a brand new, highly successful life in Chicago.
I bought new clothes, rented a beautiful apartment, and never looked back.
But every evening, I created anonymous social media accounts to check on my family.
The illusion of their perfect life was already beginning to fracture.
Madison posted a tearful video complaining that the power company had shut off the electricity at her new luxury condo.
She begged her followers to send her money because her parents were suddenly completely broke.
Without my paycheck covering their mortgage and groceries, my parents were drowning in credit card debt.
My mother posted vague, passive-aggressive quotes about ungrateful daughters abandoning their families.
I watched them suffer from a distance, feeling nothing but a profound sense of satisfaction.
But my victory was interrupted when Silas called me late on a Thursday night.
He sounded incredibly tense, which was entirely out of character for him.
He told me I needed to pack a bag and leave my new apartment immediately.
I asked him what was wrong.
Silas revealed that Apex Luxury Holdings was not just a real estate company.
It was a front for a ruthless international criminal syndicate that used properties to launder dirty money.
And because the second payment on Madison’s condo had bounced, the syndicate had sent armed men to collect the debt.

The armed men did not go to Madison’s condo.
They had tracked the original wire transfer and were currently standing outside my front door.
