Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Heir

The revelation hit me with the force of a physical blow.

Madison was the biological daughter of a ruthless cartel boss.

My mother had engaged in a long-term affair with the head of Apex Luxury Holdings decades ago.

She had lied to my father, letting him raise a child that belonged to a monster.

And the multi-million-dollar luxury condo wasn't bought with a loan.

It was a gift from Madison's real father, paid for using my stolen money just to torment me.

I looked at my sister, writhing on the floor, and felt absolutely no sympathy for her shattered hand.

Silas stepped forward and grabbed Madison aggressively by the collar of her shirt.

He demanded the name of her biological father.

Madison smiled through her pain and spat directly into Silas's face.

She told him he was already a dead man for interfering with cartel business.

Silas did not flinch.

He calmly wiped his face with a silk handkerchief.

Then he pulled a small, heavy syringe filled with clear liquid from his jacket pocket.

He told Madison it was a highly concentrated truth serum used by private interrogators, and it would make her heart feel like it was literally on fire.

Madison's arrogant smile vanished instantly.

She screamed and begged as Silas drove the needle directly into her neck.

Within seconds, her eyes dilated massively, and she began trembling uncontrollably.

Silas asked her again for the name of the cartel boss.

Madison gasped for air, unable to stop the words from spilling out of her mouth.

She confessed that her father's name was Victor Kaine, a ghost in the criminal underworld who ran everything from the shadows.

Silas let her drop to the floor, his face turning incredibly pale.

He grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the broken window.

He told me we had to leave the house immediately because Victor Kaine was the most dangerous man in the country.

We sprinted back to Silas's car and sped away into the dark streets.

I asked Silas if he knew how to fight Victor Kaine.

Silas gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning pure white.

He admitted that his law firm had been trying to build a federal case against Victor Kaine for five years, but the man was completely untouchable.

I refused to accept defeat.

I pulled out my laptop and connected to the dark web.

I told Silas that untouchable men still left digital footprints, and I was going to find every single one of them.

We spent the next forty-eight hours hidden in a cheap motel, hacking into the Apex cartel's offshore banking network.

I used the access codes I had stolen from my father's accounting files to bypass the primary firewalls.

We successfully drained thirty million dollars from Victor Kaine's illegal accounts and routed the funds to anonymous charities.

I wanted to hit the cartel boss exactly where it hurt the most.

I hit the enter key to finalize the final transfer, feeling a massive rush of victory.

Suddenly, the screen on my laptop went completely black.

A single line of green text appeared in the center of the dark screen.

"Look out the window, Claire."
