Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

The sterile hallway spun violently around me as my brain struggled to process the sheer magnitude of their evil.
My parents had actually possessed the exact funds needed to save Lily's life, provided anonymously by this ruthless billionaire.
They had deliberately chosen to let my innocent eight-year-old daughter suffocate in a hospice bed to fund their own lavish lifestyle.
My father choked and sputtered as Richard held him pinned tightly against the pristine white hospital wall.
"Let him go," my mother shrieked as she suddenly exited Daniel's hospital room down the hall.
She sprinted toward us, her expensive pearl necklace bouncing wildly against her designer blouse.
Richard released my father with a look of absolute disgust, letting the older man collapse coughing onto the floor.
"You two are the most vile, parasitic creatures I have ever had the misfortune of employing," Richard spat at her.
My mother knelt beside my gasping father, glaring up at Richard with a terrifying lack of shame.
"We did what we had to do to protect our own bloodline and our future," my mother hissed venomously.
"Lily was already entirely too sick, the doctors said the trial was only a microscopic chance," she justified coldly.
I felt a primal, blinding rage ignite deep within my soul, erasing every ounce of love I ever had for these monsters.
"You played God with my daughter's life to buy a house," I screamed, my voice echoing off the hospital tiles.
I lunged forward, wanting nothing more than to wrap my hands around my mother's meticulously maintained neck.
Richard easily caught me by the shoulders, holding me back with surprising gentleness for a man of his violent nature.
"Do not waste your energy on them, Clara, they will face their own devastating consequences soon enough," Richard promised.
I fought against his grip, sobbing hysterically as the memories of Lily's final, painful breaths flooded my mind.
"I am calling the police right now and having you all arrested for massive medical fraud and theft," I threatened loudly.
My mother stood up, smoothing her ruined designer skirt with unnerving, psychopathic calm.
"You cannot prove a single thing, Clara, the money was legally gifted to us by Richard's shell corporation."
"And as for the stem cells, Daniel has already signed the consent forms to receive them," she added with a smug smile.
I looked toward the heavy glass door of Daniel's isolation room, feeling entirely sick to my stomach.
"I need to hear it from him," I demanded, pulling myself completely free from Richard's grip.
I marched straight into the isolation anteroom and slammed my hand against the intercom button connected to Daniel's bed.
Daniel slowly opened his eyes, looking directly at me through the thick, protective glass barrier.
"Did you know they stole Lily's money to buy your house, Daniel?" I asked, my voice deadly and flat.
Daniel looked at our parents standing in the hallway behind me, then shifted his gaze back to my face.

A slow, chilling smile spread across my brother's pale, gray lips despite his extreme physical weakness.
"Of course I knew, Clara, I was the one who forged the wire transfers to intercept the Boston funds."
