Chapter 2 - The Stolen Signature

My hands began to shake so violently that I dropped my car keys into the accumulating snow.
I demanded that Dr. Evans explain exactly what he meant by a forged medical signature.
He told me that a legal medical proxy had been quietly filed with the hospital administration at dawn.
The fraudulent document granted my parents full control over my previously stored biological materials from the Boston clinic.
"That is highly illegal and a violation of my bodily autonomy," I stated, my voice rising in pure panic.
"I know it is, which is why I am risking my entire medical career to warn you right now," he replied.
I frantically asked him where the frozen stem cell samples were currently located.
Dr. Evans hesitated, taking a shaky breath before delivering the final, crushing blow to my reality.
"They were transferred out of the Boston cryogenic facility last night under your father's direct, expedited orders."
The horrific reality of their ultimate betrayal hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.
My parents had not just begged me in the hospital room out of a sudden sense of desperate love.
Their tears and pathetic pleading had been a highly calculated theatrical performance designed purely to distract me.
They had already stolen my biological material and simply wanted my verbal consent to retroactively cover their tracks.
"Where did they send those samples, Dr. Evans?" I demanded, my voice turning to absolute ice.
"They are currently being prepped for Daniel's transfusion on the restricted fourth floor of this very building."
I hung up the phone and stared fiercely back at the towering, illuminated hospital structure.
They were going to violate my past sacrifices and my fundamental rights just to save their golden child.
I picked up my keys from the wet snow and unlocked my car door to throw my bag inside.
I was not going to drive home and cry in the dark like the broken woman I used to be.
I marched right back through the sliding glass doors of the emergency room with righteous fury burning in my veins.
The security guard at the front desk looked up in pure surprise as I aggressively bypassed the visitor screening line.
I completely ignored his loud shouts and practically ran toward the restricted staff elevator banks.
I pressed the button for the fourth floor, my heart pounding a furious, relentless rhythm against my ribs.
The metal elevator doors finally opened to reveal a heavily guarded, restricted surgical wing.
My father was standing anxiously outside of a sterile operating theater, tightly clutching a medical clipboard.
He looked up and turned completely pale when he saw me marching fiercely down the brightly lit corridor.
"Clara, you are absolutely not supposed to be up here," he stammered nervously, stepping backward.
I lunged forward and snatched the medical clipboard directly out of his trembling hands.
I scanned the official legal paperwork, desperately searching for the forged signature Dr. Evans had mentioned.
The signature on the dotted line was not a clumsy forgery of my own name at all.
The name signed as the legal owner and guardian of the stem cells was Richard Pierce.
"Who in the hell is Richard Pierce?" I asked, staring intensely at my father's terrified, guilty face.

My father swallowed hard and backed away from me slowly, unable to meet my furious gaze.
"He is Daniel's real biological father," a cold, baritone voice announced from the dark shadows of the hallway.
