Chapter 6 - The Lethal Dose

I grabbed the security card from David's hand and sprinted out of the apartment before my father's voice even faded from the speaker.

Detective Miller grabbed his weapon from the floor and followed closely behind me, his face set in a mask of absolute determination.

We drove at breakneck speeds toward the private medical facility, tires screeching wildly as we navigated the slick, rain-soaked mountain roads.

The compound loomed in the distance, entirely surrounded by massive concrete walls, barbed wire, and bright, sweeping security spotlights.

Miller told me to stay low as he aggressively drove his unmarked police cruiser directly up to the heavily fortified front gate.

He used his official badge to distract the heavily armed guards, screaming at them about a fake bomb threat down the street.

While the guards were focused on the screaming detective, I slipped quietly out of the passenger side and sprinted toward a dark side entrance.

I swiped David's elite access card against the electronic scanner, praying my father had not yet completely purged the security system.

The light flashed green, and the heavy metal door clicked open just seconds before the facility's massive steel lockdown shutters began to descend.

I slid inside, finding the facility eerily silent as the lockdown protocol automatically shut off the main overhead lights.

I navigated the dark, sterile stairwell by the faint red glow of the emergency exit signs, climbing desperately toward the restricted fourth floor.

My lungs burned and my legs ached, but the terrifying thought of Lily lying helpless kept me moving forward.

I finally reached the intensive care suite, peering carefully through the small square glass window of the heavy wooden door.

I saw Lily lying in a specialized medical bed in the center of the room, her small chest rising and falling with the help of a machine.

My heart soared for a fraction of a second, completely relieved to see that my beautiful daughter was still alive.

Then my eyes adjusted to the dim light, and a wave of pure, unfiltered terror washed over my entire body.

My mother, Patricia, was standing right beside the humming life support machine, her face illuminated by the monitors.

She was holding a massive, terrifying glass syringe filled with a deadly clear liquid directly over my daughter's delicate IV line.
