Chapter 5 - The Brother's Choice

David kicked the apartment door shut behind him, ordering us to slowly drop all our weapons onto the cheap carpet.
Detective Miller carefully unholstered his police-issue firearm, placing it gently on the floor before raising his hands in the air.
I stepped protectively in front of the young nanny, staring directly down the barrel of my own brother's shaking gun.
I asked David how he could possibly sleep at night knowing he was helping our parents murder an innocent, sleeping child.
He yelled at me to shut up, claiming that Robert would cut him out of the family will entirely if he did not retrieve the recording.
I slowly walked toward him, completely ignoring the deadly weapon pointed at my heart, and begged him to remember our childhood.
I reminded him of the terrifying nights our parents used to lock us in the dark basement for making too much noise.
I reminded him how I used to hold him in the pitch black, promising that I would always protect him from their cruelty.
David's hands began to shake violently, and the arrogant, wealthy facade he wore completely shattered into a million pieces.
Tears streamed rapidly down his face as he admitted he hated himself for standing by the cake while they hurt Lily.
He slowly lowered the gun, dropping it to the floor, and pulled a heavy black lanyard from his expensive suit pocket.
He handed me his elite, unrestricted security access card for Robert's private medical facility, telling me Lily was on the fourth floor.
He warned us that the building was heavily guarded by former military contractors who would not hesitate to shoot trespassers on sight.
I hugged my brother tightly, thanking him for finally finding the courage to break the cycle of our family's horrific abuse.
Suddenly, David's cell phone rang loudly from his pocket, the screen displaying our father's private number.
David answered it on speakerphone, his voice trembling as he tried to sound casual and in control of the situation.

Robert's cold, metallic voice echoed through the small apartment, announcing that he knew David had betrayed the family bloodline.
Robert calmly stated that he had just initiated a total lethal lockdown of the medical facility, and no one was getting in or out alive.
