Chapter 7 - Trust No One

My blood ran ice cold as I stared at the envelope on the marble kitchen island.
Marcus had not noticed me standing in the shadowed hallway.
He sealed the envelope, slid it into his briefcase, and walked toward his home office.
My mind raced to connect the terrifying dots.
Marcus was not my savior; he was the legal mastermind funding this entire operation.
He was the one who drafted the custody petition and arranged the offshore account.
Drew was simply his puppet, trading my life’s work for his legal protection and cash.
I knew I had to get Theo out of this penthouse immediately.
If Marcus realized I knew the truth, we would never leave this building alive.
I quietly retreated to the guest bedroom and woke my son with a gentle shake.
I pressed a finger to my lips, signaling for him to remain absolutely silent.
We grabbed our coats and crept toward the service elevator at the back of the apartment.
The heavy metal door squeaked slightly as I pulled it open.
I prayed the sound would be masked by the classical music playing in Marcus's office.
We stepped into the dimly lit service corridor and pressed the button for the underground garage.
The elevator descent felt like it took an agonizing eternity.
Every rattle of the old elevator shaft made my heart skip a beat.
We finally reached the concrete basement level and sprinted toward my parked car.
I strapped Theo in and started the engine, keeping the headlights completely off to avoid detection.
I navigated the concrete labyrinth toward the exit gate as fast as I safely dared.
Just as I approached the payment kiosk, a massive metal security gate slammed shut, blocking the ramp.
A red warning light flashed above the barrier, indicating a manual lockdown of the entire building.

I checked my rearview mirror and saw Marcus calmly stepping out of the elevator bay.
He was casually holding a security remote control in one hand and a sleek black pistol in the other.
