Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The betrayal hit me harder than the bullets that shattered my car window.
Sarah had been my business partner and closest friend for over a decade.
She was the only person besides Drew who knew the intricate details of my banking system.
Elias warned me that Sarah was seconds away from pushing the massive three-million-dollar transfer through.
I pushed Elias aside, took over the keyboard, and accessed a hidden administrative backdoor I had coded myself.
I brutally severed Sarah’s network connection, instantly locking her out of the firm’s entire mainframe.
With her interference eliminated, the counter-virus executed perfectly.
The stolen fifty thousand dollars rushed back into my operating account.
The automated script designed to steal my clients' millions was permanently deleted and scrubbed from the servers.
I didn't stop there.
I forwarded the complete logs of Marcus’s illegal offshore activities directly to the FBI tip line.
I included the surveillance photos Elias dug up showing David and Drew meeting with known local criminals.
By sunrise, my business was entirely safe, and my funds were completely secured.
I watched the morning news from the safety of Elias's warehouse with a cup of fresh coffee.
The local anchor reported that prominent attorney Marcus Vance had been arrested by federal agents in his penthouse.
A secondary report showed Drew’s luxury SUV being towed away by the repo company in front of her weeping children.
I had finally won the war, protected my son, and severed the toxic leeches from my life forever.
I hugged Theo tightly, breathing a deep sigh of pure relief.
The nightmare was finally over, and we were free to start a brand new life.
Then, Elias walked over with a grim expression and handed me a thick, wax-sealed envelope he found outside.
Inside the envelope was a freshly approved life insurance policy taken out on my life for ten million dollars.
The sole beneficiary was a mysterious offshore trust, and the policy included a guaranteed immediate payout upon my murder.

Pinned to the bloody document was a handwritten note from Sarah.
The note simply said the financial ruin was just a distraction, and the real assassins are coming for you tonight.
