Chapter 4 - Cornered in the Dark

Panic gripped my chest as the dark sedan idled aggressively behind my trapped car.

The glare from its headlights blinded me in the rearview mirror.

I immediately locked all the doors and told Theo to keep his head down.

I grabbed my phone to call the detective I had just spoken with inside the precinct.

Before I could dial, the driver's side door of the sedan opened.

A tall man stepped out into the freezing wind, wearing a heavy wool overcoat.

He walked slowly toward my window with his hands tucked deep into his pockets.

My heart hammered against my ribs as he stepped out of the blinding light.

It was David.

He looked older, thinner, and far more dangerous than the man I used to love.

He tapped on the reinforced glass of my window with a silver coin.

I cracked the window down barely an inch, just enough to hear his voice.

David smiled a crooked, lifeless smile and told me I was looking well.

He said he heard I was cutting off the family funds and acting selfish.

I demanded to know why he was helping Drew steal my business capital.

He laughed and said fifty thousand dollars was just a small down payment.

David revealed he owed some very dangerous people a lot of money in Miami.

He told me that Drew promised him a cut of my firm’s total assets if he helped her break me.

I told him I would rather burn my business to the ground than give him another dime.

David leaned closer to the crack in the window, his breath turning to vapor in the cold air.

He warned me that this was no longer just about the money.

He pulled a folded piece of heavy parchment paper from his coat pocket and slid it through the window gap.

It was an emergency custody petition stamped by a family court judge.

The document granted David temporary physical custody of Theo, starting immediately.
