Chapter 6 - The Watcher

I dropped my phone in sheer terror as the live video continued to play.

Someone had hacked directly into my phone's front-facing camera.

I immediately grabbed the device and placed a thick piece of tape over the lens.

My hands trembled as I realized the extent of their surveillance.

Drew and David did not have the technical skills to execute a hack like this.

They were definitely receiving help from a professional.

I put the car in gear and drove to the only place I knew they wouldn't expect me to go.

I headed straight to the luxury apartment building where my biggest corporate client lived.

Marcus Vance was a ruthless defense attorney who paid me handsomely to keep his chaotic books in order.

I knew he owed me several massive favors for catching tax errors that would have ended his career.

I arrived at his building and bribed the doorman with a hundred-dollar bill to let us up.

I pounded on Marcus’s heavy oak door until he finally answered in a silk robe.

He looked annoyed until he saw the raw desperation on my face and Theo shivering beside me.

He ushered us inside his sprawling penthouse and locked the heavy deadbolts.

I laid out the entire conspiracy, the forged wire transfer, and the fake custody petition.

Marcus poured himself a glass of scotch and listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he examined the digital wire transfer on my laptop screen.

He chuckled darkly and told me this was child’s play compared to what he dealt with daily.

Marcus promised to bury David in so much legal red tape he would never see the inside of a courtroom.

He offered to let Theo and me sleep in his guest suite where we would be completely safe.

I finally felt a shred of hope that I could actually win this war.

I tucked Theo into the massive guest bed and kissed his forehead gently.

I walked back into the living room to thank Marcus for his incredible generosity.

I froze in my tracks when I saw Marcus quietly slipping a thick stack of cash into an envelope.

The envelope had my sister Drew’s name written across the front in bold black ink.
