Chapter 9 - The Legal Checkmate

I was officially facing total financial ruin.

Vanessa had successfully weaponized the forged deed, leaving me responsible for a catastrophic environmental disaster I had nothing to do with.

My lawyer, Sarah, told me that we needed to prove Vanessa knew about the tank before she poured the concrete.

If we could prove she intentionally disturbed an illegal toxic site, the state would transfer the liability back to her and arrest her for environmental sabotage.

I barely slept for three days.

I spent every waking hour digging into the county's physical archives, pulling every single building permit issued in our neighborhood for the last thirty years.

I was looking for any record of a commercial oil tank installation.

I found nothing in the official registry.

But as I was putting the files back, I noticed a separate box labeled as rejected and unpermitted commercial zoning requests.

I blew the dust off the lid and started flipping through the yellowed, fragile papers.

Near the bottom of the stack, I found a commercial zoning application from twenty years ago.

A local construction company had requested permission to bury a massive oil tank on the exact plot of land Vanessa now owned.

The city council had officially denied the request due to environmental risks.

I looked closer at the signature of the construction company owner who had submitted the failed application.

It was Vanessa Reed.

She had owned the construction company before she became a real estate agent.

She had illegally buried the tank herself two decades ago to save money on disposal fees, and then covered it up when she sold the company.

I smiled, realizing I finally had the absolute proof I needed to destroy her.

I took the documents to the mayor's office, ready to blow the whistle on the entire operation.

The mayor reviewed my documents, sighed heavily, and locked his office door.

He looked at me with cold eyes and revealed that the city council hadn't just ignored the illegal burial.

They had accepted a massive cash bribe from Vanessa to keep it a secret, meaning the city government was fully complicit in the cover-up.
