Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Payoff

The mayor thought his confession would intimidate me into remaining silent.

He assumed I would back down to avoid fighting the entire city government.

Instead, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and showed him that I had secretly recorded his entire confession.

I told the mayor that if he did not fix this immediately, the recording and the documents were going straight to the federal environmental protection agency and the national news.

The color drained completely from the mayor's face.

Within two hours, the city council held an emergency closed-door session.

To save themselves from a federal investigation, they completely turned on Vanessa.

The city immediately invalidated the forged quitclaim deed, restoring my original property line.

They issued a mandate forcing Vanessa to pay for the entire toxic cleanup, the demolition of her ruined deck, and the repair of my severed water line.

The state real estate commission permanently revoked her license for fraud.

Faced with millions of dollars in fines and impending criminal charges, Vanessa was forced to sell her house to the city at a massive loss and leave town in absolute disgrace.

It took three months for the environmental team to remove the tank and restore the soil.

When the ground was finally safe, the city paid for a brand-new, premium cedar fence to be installed exactly five inches inside my property line.

The nightmare was finally over.

I sat on my patio on a quiet Sunday afternoon, sipping a cold beer and admiring the beautiful new fence.

Life had returned to the peaceful, boring routine I had always loved.

I walked over to the edge of the yard to plant some fresh flowers near the new boundary.

My shovel sank into the dirt and suddenly struck something hard and metallic.

I brushed the soil away to reveal a heavy, locked briefcase buried exactly where the original cedar post had stood.

I pulled it out of the ground, noticing a small red blinking light on the side of the lock.
