Chapter 7 - The Chase

Rachel stumbled forward and collapsed into the arms of the FBI agent.
"I'm okay, I'm okay," she gasped, clutching the minor scratch on her neck.
The agent handed her to the local police officers and raised his radio.
"Suspect is heading south toward the emergency stairwell," he barked into the microphone.
"Lock down all exits and shoot to stop if he resists."
Inside the hospital room, Margaret dropped to her knees and began to sob hysterically.
"He left me," she cried, rocking back and forth on the linoleum floor.
"My own flesh and blood just left me here to rot."
I looked down at her with absolutely no sympathy in my heart.
"He learned his selfishness from you, Margaret," I told her coldly.
An officer stepped forward and roughly pulled Margaret to her feet, slapping heavy steel handcuffs on her wrists.
"Margaret Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated assault," the officer recited.
As they dragged my screaming mother-in-law out of the room, Rachel rushed back to my bedside.
She quickly checked my bandages and adjusted my pain medication IV drip.
"You did it, Rachel," I whispered, squeezing her hand weakly.
"No, you did it," she smiled through her tears.
Arthur Vance tried to quietly slip out the door while everyone was distracted.
"Not so fast, Arthur," I called out.
Two more FBI agents stepped into the room and blocked the lawyer's path.
"We have a warrant for your arrest regarding financial fraud and evidence tampering," one agent said.
Arthur sighed in defeat and held out his wrists for the cuffs.
My father's killers and their enablers were finally facing justice.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of a gunshot echoed from the emergency stairwell down the hall.
Rachel flinched, and the FBI agents immediately drew their weapons.
The radio on the agent's shoulder crackled to life with frantic static.
"Agent down, agent down!" a voice screamed through the speaker.
"The suspect has acquired a firearm and has taken a hostage on the roof."
My stomach dropped into an endless abyss.

Ethan had not been running away to escape.
He had been running upward to the hospital's helipad.
