Chapter 2 - The Medical Proxy

Arthur Vance did not even glance in my direction.

He walked straight up to the police officers and handed them a stack of legal papers.

"My client will not be answering any questions tonight," Arthur said in a cold, authoritative tone.

The taller officer frowned and looked at the documents.

"We have a credible accusation of domestic violence and attempted murder, counselor," the officer stated.

Arthur shook his head and let out a soft sigh of manufactured pity.

"You have the ramblings of a mentally unstable woman experiencing a psychotic break."

He pointed directly at the curtain hiding my burned body.

"My client's wife has been suffering from early-onset dementia and severe delusions for over a year."

I opened my eyes in shock, biting my lip to keep from screaming in pain.

Arthur reached into his briefcase and pulled out a document stamped with a golden seal.

"This is a legally binding medical power of attorney."

"It grants Ethan full control over his wife's medical decisions."

Rachel stepped forward, her face flushed with anger.

"I am her attending physician, and she is perfectly lucid," Rachel fired back.

Arthur smiled a predatory smile.

"Not according to the three private psychiatrists who signed this evaluation yesterday."

Ethan stepped closer to the bed, looking down at me with absolute triumph.

"My wife needs specialized psychiatric care immediately," Ethan told the officers.

"I am transferring her to a private mental health facility out of state."

Margaret stopped her fake crying and grinned wickedly.

"It is for her own good, officers," she purred.

If they took me to that private facility, I would never see the outside world again.

They would drug me until I actually lost my mind.

Rachel tried to block the bed, but Arthur handed her a court order.

"If you interfere with this transfer, Doctor, you will lose your medical license," Arthur warned.

Two large paramedics from the private facility entered the room carrying a straightjacket and heavy restraints.

They moved toward my bed with empty syringes in their hands.
