Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Coffee

The words hung in the sterile hospital air like a toxic cloud.
My heart shattered into a million jagged pieces.
My father had died of a sudden, massive heart attack exactly one year ago.
The doctors said it was natural causes due to his high stress and old age.
I tried to sit up, ignoring the burning agony tearing through my blistered skin.
"What did you do to him?" I choked out, tears spilling down my cheeks.
Margaret let out a cruel, unapologetic cackle.
"His heart medicine was so easy to replace, darling," she mocked me.
"A few crushed pills in his morning coffee, and nature simply took its course."
Ethan grabbed his mother's arm, his eyes wide with sheer panic.
"Shut your mouth right now!" he roared at her.
But Margaret yanked her arm away, completely unhinged by her son's betrayal.
"Why should I go down for your crimes, Ethan?" she yelled.
"You were the one who researched the dosage on your fancy computer!"
The two police officers had their hands hovering over their service weapons.
Arthur Vance quickly backed away from his clients, realizing this was a sinking ship.
"I resign as your legal counsel effective immediately," Arthur stated, rushing toward the locked steel doors.
"You can't leave me here, Arthur!" Ethan pleaded, grabbing the lawyer's jacket.
Arthur shoved him backward so hard that Ethan stumbled into a medical tray.
I looked at Rachel, who was discreetly recording everything on her cell phone.
We had their confessions on tape, witnessed by law enforcement.
They had murdered my father for his money.
And they had nearly burned me alive for the exact same reason.
"You are both going to spend the rest of your miserable lives in a concrete box," I promised them.
Ethan's desperate eyes darted around the locked room like a trapped rat.
He realized the federal agents would be arriving the moment the lockdown lifted.
His gaze suddenly landed on a surgical scalpel resting on the knocked-over medical tray.
Before anyone could react, Ethan snatched the sharp blade.
May you like
But he didn't point it at me.
He wrapped his arm around Dr. Rachel Carter's neck and pressed the scalpel against her throat.
