Chapter 9 - The Rescue

Daniel stood aggressively in the ruined doorway, breathing heavily, with dark blood dripping steadily from his injured wrist. Marianne gasped in genuine shock and immediately lowered the barrel of the silver handgun. "Daniel, what on earth are you doing here?" she demanded loudly, trying desperately to sound authoritative. "I heard everything you just said, Mom," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with years of heavily suppressed trauma. He looked at me and Noah with an expression of profound, deeply agonizing guilt. "When I came to the house earlier, I wasn't trying to drug you, Emily," Daniel confessed tearfully. "I had found the missing vials hidden inside Mom's car, and I was holding the syringe to confront her about it." The horrific, violent misunderstanding in our kitchen suddenly made perfect, tragic sense. I had attacked him mercilessly before he could explain he had finally figured out his mother's monstrous crimes. "You are just confused, Daniel," Marianne cooed softly, trying urgently to regain her psychological control over him. "Emily is highly dangerous, and she is trying to maliciously take our beautiful baby away from us." Daniel shook his head firmly, standing solidly between me and his deeply deranged mother. "She isn't the dangerous one, Mom," he said with a newfound, unbreakable strength. "I called the state police on my way over here, and they are completely surrounding the house right now." The deafening wail of multiple police sirens suddenly filled the quiet, wealthy suburban neighborhood. Bright red and blue lights flashed wildly through the large, expensive bedroom windows. Marianne's perfect aristocratic composure finally shattered into absolute, uncontrollable panic. She raised the loaded gun again, aiming it wildly between me and her own flesh and blood. "If I cannot have him, nobody will ever have him!" she screamed hysterically. Daniel lunged forward heroically just as the deafening, explosive sound of a gunshot echoed through the room.
