Chapter 8 - The Confession

I tightened my protective, loving grip around Noah, shielding his tiny fragile body with my own frame. "You are an absolute monster, Marianne," I spat out angrily, glaring defiantly at the barrel of her gun. She chuckled softly, stepping fully into the elegant bedroom and closing the heavy oak door behind her. "I am simply a devoted mother, Emily," she corrected me with a deeply twisted, sickening smile. "Daniel was born so incredibly frail, and I spent his entire childhood keeping him safe, keeping him medicated, keeping him mine." The horrific, fragmented pieces of the puzzle finally slammed together in my terrified mind. Marianne suffered from severe Munchausen syndrome by proxy, and she had systematically abused Daniel his entire life. Now that Daniel was a healthy adult, she desperately needed a new, helpless victim to control and manipulate. "You intentionally made him sick on purpose just so you could play the role of the heroic, suffering mother," I stated in pure disgust. "And he loved me unconditionally for it," she boasted proudly without a shred of genuine remorse. "But then you came along and tried to steal him away with your healthy, independent, modern lifestyle." She stepped one pace closer, the deadly gun remaining perfectly unwavering in her remarkably steady hand. "I had to show Daniel that you were an entirely unfit mother so he would willingly bring my grandson back to me." I carefully reached deep into my torn jacket pocket with my only free hand. I blindly pressed the record button on my cell phone, desperately praying the battery was still alive. "So you forced him to steal the dangerous drugs from his ambulance?" I asked loudly, trying to keep her talking. "Oh, please, Daniel is far too weak and cowardly to actually steal anything," she scoffed arrogantly. "I took his spare keys and raided the ambulance myself while he was distracted on an emergency call." She had just confessed to absolutely everything on tape, completely exonerating my husband of the theft. Daniel had not been trying to violently inject me with drugs back at the house after all. He had been trying to stop me from ruining his mother's plan because he was still her deeply brainwashed victim. Suddenly, the heavy bedroom door exploded violently inward, torn completely off its solid brass hinges.
