Chapter 1 - The Accusation

Dr. Patel's words hung in the sterile air of the hospital waiting room. Adult sleeping medication. The room spun around me as I stared at my husband. Daniel looked completely paralyzed by the horrifying news. I immediately pointed my trembling finger toward the hallway. "It was your mother," I sobbed uncontrollably. "She was the only one alone with Noah before he started foaming at the mouth." Daniel stepped back as if I had physically struck him. "Emily, you cannot seriously accuse my mother of poisoning our baby," he whispered in shock. "She insisted on feeding him and putting him to bed," I fired back defensively. "She even came back to the house using her spare key after supposedly leaving for the night." Dr. Patel held up a hand to stop our rapidly escalating argument. "Regardless of who administered the drug, I am legally obligated to report this incident immediately," the doctor explained. Two uniformed police officers suddenly walked into the tense waiting area. They were accompanied by a woman wearing a sharp gray suit and carrying a metal clipboard. "Mr. and Mrs. Carter?" the woman asked with a cold, professional tone. "I am Brenda Vance with Child Protective Services." I rushed forward, desperate for someone to help me protect my vulnerable son. "You have to arrest my mother-in-law right now," I pleaded urgently. Brenda Vance looked at me with an expression made of pure ice. "We are not here for Marianne Carter," she stated clearly. "We received an anonymous tip claiming you have been suffering from severe postpartum psychosis." She held up a plastic zip-top bag containing an orange prescription bottle with my name printed on it. "We found these crushed sedatives hidden inside your diaper bag, Mrs. Carter."
