Chapter 7 - The Mastermind

The incredibly corrupt CPS worker eagerly shoved the thick envelope of cash directly into her expensive designer purse. Brenda Vance had clearly been on Marianne's illegal payroll from the very beginning of this nightmare. The entire terrifying investigation at the hospital was nothing but a carefully orchestrated theatrical performance. I watched helplessly as Marianne smiled broadly and poured Brenda a generous glass of expensive red wine. "The legal paperwork for full permanent custody will be completely finalized by Monday morning," Brenda promised greedily. "Excellent," Marianne replied smoothly, sipping her own dark drink with immense satisfaction. "Emily will be locked away in a secure psychiatric ward, and my beautiful grandson will finally be mine forever." White-hot rage burned through my veins hotter than the bleeding cuts on my arms and legs. I crept carefully around to the side of the massive house and found the old wooden cellar doors unlocked. I descended slowly into the dark, damp basement, moving as silently as a ghost through the shadows. I crept up the creaky wooden stairs to the main floor, expertly avoiding the floorboards I knew would make a sound. I could hear Noah crying softly from the sprawling upstairs master bedroom. I bypassed the dining room entirely and sprinted silently up the plush, carpeted staircase. I burst eagerly into the bedroom and found my sweet baby boy trapped inside a heavy wooden crib. I scooped him up tightly into my arms, warm tears of sheer relief spilling rapidly down my face. He stopped crying almost instantly, recognizing my familiar scent and securely nuzzling against my neck. "I've got you, my sweet, perfect angel," I whispered fiercely into his incredibly soft hair. I turned swiftly toward the bedroom door to make my daring escape back into the night. Marianne was already standing in the doorway, completely blocking my only exit from the room. She held a small, polished silver handgun pointed directly at the center of my chest. "Put the child down on the bed, Emily," she commanded with a deadly, aristocratic calmness.
