Chapter 9 - The Viral Justice

Ryan held the burner phone to his ear, waiting for his publicist to confirm the destruction of my reputation.

I knew that if the media labeled me insane, no judge would ever look at the evidence in my backpack.

I desperately scanned the desk behind me and saw a heavy brass paperweight shaped like a globe.

I grabbed the heavy metal object and swung it violently at the side of his head.

The brass connected with a sickening crack, and Ryan stumbled backward with a cry of pain.

I did not wait for him to recover.

I grabbed the fire alarm pull station on the wall and yanked it down as hard as I could.

The deafening siren echoed through the massive house, instantly notifying the local fire department.

I unlocked the deadbolt and sprinted out of the house into the cool night air.

I drove straight to my lawyer’s office, refusing to wait for the morning to take action.

Sarah met me at midnight, and I dumped the contents of the safe onto her conference table.

She was horrified by the insurance policies and immediately drafted an emergency motion to the supreme court.

But I knew the legal system moved entirely too slow to save Emma tonight.

I opened my social media accounts and uploaded the unedited video of Diane hitting Emma.

I attached photos of the forged medical documents and the terrifying life insurance policies.

I tagged every major local news station, investigative journalist, and police department in the city.

By sunrise, the post had been shared over a hundred thousand times.

The public outcry was absolutely deafening, forcing the judge to call an emergency hearing at nine in the morning.

We walked into the courtroom ready to completely destroy Ryan and Diane.

But Ryan’s high-priced attorney stood up and announced they had a surprise character witness ready to testify against me.

The courtroom doors opened, and my best friend Maya walked down the aisle toward the witness stand.
