Chapter 2 - The Stolen Safety

I backed away from the window with my heart pounding against my ribs.

Ryan had tracked my location within hours of me fleeing the banquet hall.

I rushed to the living room and shook Maya awake on her couch.

I told her my husband was standing outside the apartment building right now.

Maya immediately grabbed her phone and dialed the local police precinct.

She told the dispatcher a hostile man was trespassing on her property and threatening a mother and child.

We waited in terrifying silence for ten minutes until the flashing blue lights illuminated the living room walls.

I looked out the window again to see the police officers speaking to Ryan on the sidewalk.

Instead of looking panicked, Ryan calmly showed the officers something on his phone.

The officers nodded at him respectfully and actually shook his hand before getting back into their cruiser.

Ryan looked up at my window one last time before casually walking away into the darkness.

I did not understand how he had charmed the police so easily.

My hands trembled as I realized he was already manipulating the narrative.

I decided I needed to secure my financial escape route immediately.

A month ago, I had secretly opened a private bank account and transferred ten thousand dollars into it.

It was my emergency fund to hire a ruthless divorce attorney.

I opened my banking app to check the balance and ensure the money was safe.

The screen loaded slowly, revealing my transaction history from the past few hours.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

The account balance read zero dollars.

Someone had initiated a wire transfer just twenty minutes ago.

The entire ten thousand dollars had been routed into an offshore account owned by Diane.
