Chapter 6 - The Stolen Child

The police officers ordered me to place my hands on the hood of my car.

I complied immediately, tears of absolute frustration streaming down my face.

I yelled that Diane was a liar and that she had paid a doctor to forge my medical records.

Diane simply sighed dramatically and told the officers I was having another psychotic break.

One of the officers asked me where my two-year-old daughter was currently located.

I refused to answer, knowing Maya was keeping Emma safely hidden at her apartment.

I told the officers I had video proof of Diane striking my child at a public banquet.

I pulled out my phone and played the video of the birthday party right there in the parking lot.

The officers watched the footage closely, their expressions shifting from hostile to uncertain.

The lead officer looked at Diane and asked her to explain the physical violence in the video.

Diane did not miss a single beat.

She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a stack of legal papers sealed by a judge.

She handed them to the officer, explaining that the video was taken completely out of context.

She claimed Emma had been choking on a piece of hard candy, and she was simply slapping her back to dislodge it.

The legal papers were a temporary restraining order against me, signed by the family court judge an hour ago.

The officer handed the papers back to Diane and told me there was nothing he could do.

He said it was a civil matter, but I was legally required to surrender custody of the child immediately.

I told them they would have to arrest me because I would never hand my daughter over to an abuser.

My phone suddenly chimed with a frantic text message from Maya.

I looked at the screen and felt my entire world collapse into absolute darkness.

Maya wrote that Child Protective Services had just kicked down her apartment door.

She said they were violently taking Emma away and putting her into a state vehicle.
