Chapter 8 - The Crumbling Empire

The police officers rushed forward and forcefully pulled David off my body.
I gasped for air, clutching my bruised throat as tears of relief flooded my eyes.
David screamed and fought against the officers, but he was quickly pinned to the marble floor.
Heavy steel handcuffs were locked securely around his wrists.
Beatrice tried to adjust her expensive robe and project an aura of total innocence.
"Officers, this is a terrible misunderstanding," she lied smoothly.
"My daughter-in-law is having a severe mental breakdown and attacked us."
Lucas stepped forward, leaning heavily on a wooden cane.
His face was severely bruised from the attack David had orchestrated days ago.
"Save your lies for the judge, mother," Lucas spat with sheer disgust.
Lucas handed a thick folder of physical documents directly to the lead detective.
"I hid the original dashcam footage and the financial records in a safety deposit box before David attacked me," Lucas explained.
The detective looked at Beatrice, his expression completely hardened.
"Beatrice Lawson, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and insurance fraud," the detective announced.
Beatrice shrieked like a wild animal as two officers aggressively placed her in handcuffs.
Chloe tried to sneak quietly out the open front door during the chaos.
A female officer grabbed Chloe by her designer coat and slammed her against the wall.
"You are not going anywhere, sweetheart," the officer firmly stated.
I sat on the floor, watching the empire of abuse entirely crumble before my eyes.
The lead detective knelt beside me, offering a gentle hand to help me stand.
"You are safe now, ma'am," he assured me kindly.
He told me that the evidence Lucas provided was more than enough to lock them away for decades.
But then the detective paused, pulling a sealed file from his jacket pocket.
He looked at David, who was currently crying pathetically on the floor.
"We also reopened the case file on your first wife's tragic drowning five years ago," the detective revealed.
David stopped crying and turned entirely pale, looking exactly like a ghost.
"It turns out, the signature on her multi-million dollar life insurance policy perfectly matches the forgery on this one," the detective stated.

David wasn't just a cheating husband with a gambling problem.
He and his mother were seasoned serial killers who preyed on wealthy, vulnerable women.
