Chapter 4 - The Brother's Sacrifice

Beatrice stood at the foot of my hospital bed with her hands clasped perfectly together.

She looked at me as if I were a piece of trash sitting on her expensive rug.

"You always were too nosy for your own good, Maya," she sighed.

I pressed the emergency call button with my thumb, but nothing happened.

Beatrice smiled and held up a severed wire that belonged to the call system.

"The nurses are dealing with a very distracting emergency on the other floor," she explained.

David stood nervously in the corner, unable to even look me in the eye.

"We are going to make this look like a tragic medical complication," Beatrice told me.

She pulled a small syringe filled with a clear liquid from her elegant purse.

"This will induce a massive heart attack that the doctors will blame on your pregnancy stress."

I screamed as loud as my lungs would allow, begging for someone to help me.

David finally stepped forward, looking slightly panicked.

"Mom, we can't do this here," he whispered frantically.

Beatrice slapped him across the face so hard the sound echoed in the small room.

"Shut up and hold her arms down," she commanded her son.

David hesitated, but his fear of his mother overrode whatever humanity he had left.

He grabbed my wrists and pinned them tightly against the hospital mattress.

I thrashed wildly, kicking my uninjured leg to fight them off.

Beatrice calmly removed the cap from the needle and stepped toward my IV line.

Suddenly, a massive crash shattered the heavy wooden door of the room.

Lucas burst through the splintered wood holding a heavy metal fire extinguisher.

He swung the heavy red cylinder and struck David directly in the ribs.

David collapsed to the floor, gasping for air and clutching his chest.

Beatrice shrieked and dropped the syringe onto the linoleum floor.

Lucas stood in front of my bed, fiercely shielding me from his own family.

"I recorded the dashcam footage from the car," Lucas yelled at his mother.

He pulled a small USB drive from his pocket and held it up.

"It clearly records you telling David to release the brake to crush her."

Beatrice's arrogant composure finally shattered into sheer panic.

"Give that to me right now, Lucas," she demanded.

Lucas shook his head and pressed a button on his phone.

"I already sent a copy to my private email server," he lied bravely.

He looked back at me and promised he would get me out of this nightmare.

"I am going to the police station right now," Lucas declared.

He backed out of the broken doorway, warning his mother to stay away from me.

I breathed a heavy sigh of relief, thanking God for my brave brother-in-law.

I waited anxiously for an hour, hoping the police would finally arrive to arrest them.

My phone suddenly buzzed on the bedside table with an incoming call.

The caller ID displayed Lucas's name, and I answered it eagerly.

"Lucas, where are the police?" I asked.

A dark, sinister chuckle echoed through the speaker.

"Lucas had a terrible accident on the stairwell," David's voice whispered.
