Chapter 3 - The Mistress's Warning

I stared at the woman who had ruined my marriage and stolen my future.

Chloe looked entirely out of place in the dreary hospital room.

David immediately panicked and tried to grab her arm.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he hissed through clenched teeth.

Chloe ripped her arm away from his grasp with a look of pure disdain.

"I am trying to save my own life, David," she snapped back.

She turned her attention back to me and pulled a stack of papers from her designer bag.

"I didn't want your money, Maya," she confessed.

I gripped the bedsheets, my mind racing to process this bizarre confrontation.

"You stole fifty thousand dollars from my account," I argued.

Chloe shook her head and tossed the papers onto my lap.

"David owes a lot of dangerous people a massive amount of cash," she explained.

She told me that David had a severe gambling addiction that his mother had covered up for years.

He had borrowed heavily from a violent loan shark syndicate in the city.

Chloe revealed that she was actually the bookie's accountant, not just a random girlfriend.

She had been dating David to ensure he paid back every single dime.

"He used your identity to secure the final loan," Chloe revealed.

My stomach dropped as I looked at the forged signatures on the documents in my lap.

David had signed away our house, my car, and my future earnings.

"I transferred the money to pay them off so they wouldn't kill both of us," David interrupted weakly.

Chloe laughed a cold, humorless laugh.

"Fifty thousand only covers the interest, you idiot," she told him.

She looked back at me with a genuinely sympathetic expression.

"You need to take your baby and run far away from this family," Chloe warned me.

She leaned closer to my bed and lowered her voice to a whisper.

"The incident with the car on the hill was not an accident."

My breath hitched in my throat as the terrifying truth washed over me.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"David's mother told him that a grieving widower doesn't have to pay his dead wife's debts," Chloe said.

They had deliberately let the brake slip, hoping I would be crushed under the vehicle.

I looked at David, who had turned completely pale and was backing away toward the door.

He had actually tried to murder me and our unborn child for money.

Suddenly, the hospital room door was shoved open with tremendous force.

Beatrice marched into the room with two large men in dark suits behind her.

She looked at Chloe, then at me, with a terrifyingly calm smile.

"It seems we have a small pest control problem in this room," Beatrice announced.

One of the large men grabbed Chloe by the hair and dragged her backward.

The other man stepped out of the room and pulled the heavy door shut.

I heard the distinctive click of the deadbolt locking from the outside.

I was trapped in the room with the woman who wanted me dead.
