Chapter 2 - The Empty Accounts

The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital ceiling blinded me as I opened my eyes.

The rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor filled the sterile room.

I instinctively placed my hand over my stomach and let out a breath of relief.

A gentle nurse standing by my bed smiled and told me the baby was perfectly fine.

She explained that the severe stress had caused a minor placental tear, but the bleeding had stopped.

My knee, however, was encased in a heavy brace that extended from my thigh to my ankle.

The door to my room slowly creaked open.

David walked in holding a pathetic bouquet of cheap flowers.

He wore an expression of deep concern that I knew was entirely manufactured.

"I was so worried about you, darling," he lied smoothly.

He glanced nervously at the nurse, playing the role of the devoted husband.

I stared at him in absolute disgust.

"Get out of my room," I whispered harshly.

The nurse sensed the tension and quickly excused herself from the room.

The moment the door clicked shut, David's caring facade instantly vanished.

"You really made a massive scene over nothing," he scoffed.

He tossed the flowers onto the small table and crossed his arms.

"My mother is furious that you called the police and embarrassed our family."

I reached under my pillow and pulled out the phone Lucas had given me.

"You spent our fuel money on your mistress and watched me bleed," I stated.

David rolled his eyes and sighed dramatically.

"I told you it was just a few dollars for gas," he muttered.

I unlocked my phone and opened my mobile banking application.

I wanted to see exactly how much this betrayal had cost our family.

I stared at the screen, unable to comprehend the numbers in front of me.

My heart began to pound violently in my chest.

I refreshed the page three times, but the terrifying reality remained the same.

Our joint savings account was completely empty.

My personal emergency fund had also been completely drained.

More than fifty thousand dollars had vanished in a single afternoon.

I looked up at the man I had married with sheer terror.

"Where is all my money, David?" I demanded.

David smirked and took a step closer to my bed.

"I transferred it to a secure account to protect it from your crazy emotional outbursts."

I looked closely at the transaction history on my screen.

The money had not been transferred to a secure savings account.

It had been wired to an offshore corporate entity registered under the name Chloe Vance.

The girlfriend hadn't just received gas money.

She had stolen my entire life savings.

Before I could scream for security, the hospital room door swung open again.

A beautiful blonde woman in a designer coat walked casually into the room.

She looked at David, then looked down at me with a pitiful smile.

"Hello, Maya," the woman said softly.

"I am Chloe, and we really need to talk about your husband's debts."
