Chapter 7 - The Cornered Prey

David dragged me out of the car by my arm and shoved me onto the wet grass.
My knee screamed in agony as I landed hard against the cold ground.
Chloe stood silently by the car, watching my destruction with dead eyes.
"You really thought a cheap mistress would value loyalty over cash?" David sneered.
He grabbed me by the collar of my coat and hauled me back toward the massive house.
Beatrice was waiting in the grand foyer, her face twisted in an ugly mask of triumph.
"It is time to finish what we started on that hill," Beatrice commanded.
David dragged me toward the towering marble staircase in the center of the hall.
They planned to stage a tragic fall that would finally execute their sick insurance plot.
"Let me go!" I screamed, thrashing wildly against his grip.
David hoisted me up onto the third step, his fingers digging painfully into my arms.
"Stop fighting, Maya, and it will be over quickly," he whispered in my ear.
I realized nobody was coming to save me this time.
I had to rely entirely on my own strength to protect my unborn child.
I stopped struggling and let my body go completely limp in his arms.
David staggered backward slightly, caught off guard by the sudden dead weight.
I used the momentum to swing my heavy, metal-reinforced knee brace directly upward.
The hard steel hinge connected violently with David's groin.
He let out a high-pitched shriek of absolute agony and dropped me instantly.
I scrambled away from the stairs, crawling desperately across the slick marble floor.
Beatrice rushed forward, trying to grab my hair to drag me back.
I grabbed a heavy bronze vase from an entryway table and swung it blindly.
The vase struck Beatrice's shin, causing her to shriek and stumble backward into the wall.
I pushed myself up, ignoring the searing pain in my leg, and lunged toward the heavy wooden front door.
I grabbed the brass handle and pulled it downward with all my might.
David tackled me from behind just as the door unlatched.
We crashed to the floor, his hands wrapping tightly around my throat to choke the life out of me.
My vision began to blur, and black spots danced across my eyes.
Suddenly, the heavy front door was kicked wide open with explosive force.
A bruised and bandaged Lucas stood in the doorway, holding a steel crowbar.

Right behind him stood a dozen armed police officers with their weapons drawn.
"Get your hands off her!" the lead detective roared into the chaotic hallway.
