Chapter 9 - The Hostage

A heavy, terrifying silence fell over the cold concrete interrogation room.
The precinct captain and the District Attorney slowly raised their hands and backed away toward the door.
Vanessa dragged Victor out of the metal chair, using his trembling body as a human shield.
My son looked at me with pure terror in his eyes, finally realizing the true monster he had married.
Vanessa ordered everyone to clear the hallway and prepare a police cruiser for her immediate escape.
She sneered at me and loudly mocked my attempts to play the protective, loving mother.
I stood my ground perfectly still, refusing to show her a single ounce of fear.
I looked directly into Victor's eyes and gave him a subtle, almost imperceptible nod.
It was a silent command I used to give him when he was a child standing up to schoolyard bullies.
Victor swallowed hard, tears streaming down his bruised face, and finally found his lost courage.
He violently threw his elbow backward, striking Vanessa squarely in the center of her ribs.
Vanessa gasped in pain and stumbled, her grip on his collar loosening for a fraction of a second.
Victor threw his full body weight forward to break free from her grasp and protect me.
Vanessa recovered her balance instantly and aimed the gun directly at Victor's fleeing back.
The precinct captain lunged forward to tackle her, but he was a second too late.
A deafening gunshot echoed wildly off the concrete walls of the small room.
The bright flash of the muzzle blinded everyone in the room for a terrifying moment.
I screamed at the top of my lungs as the harsh smell of burnt gunpowder filled the air.

Victor collapsed heavily onto the cold floor, a pool of dark red blood rapidly spreading around his body.
Vanessa stood over him with a smoking gun, completely devoid of any human emotion or regret.
