Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Victor stood frozen in the grand foyer as Vanessa's cruel words echoed off the marble walls.
He reached out to grab her arm, but she slapped his hand away with vicious force.
Vanessa told him he was nothing more than a pathetic little boy hiding behind his mother's skirt.
She confessed that she had orchestrated the entire mob loan with his corrupt corporate lawyer.
They had planned to take the ten million dollars and leave Victor to take the fall for the forged documents.
Vanessa stepped out the front door and left Victor entirely alone in the massive house.
The repo men finished towing the cars away and the estate fell into a dead silence.
Victor sank to his knees on the very same floor where he had beaten me hours earlier.
Panic finally set in as he realized his entire artificial kingdom was built on sand.
He pulled out his phone and desperately dialed my personal number to beg for a bailout.
He expected to hear my soft, forgiving voice on the other end of the line.
He was ready to cry and pretend he was sorry for striking my face.
The phone rang three times before someone finally picked up the call.
Victor frantically apologized and pleaded for me to send a wire transfer to save him.
A deep, gravelly voice answered him instead of me.
It was Volkov himself speaking through my personal cell phone.
Volkov coldly informed Victor that his mother was currently tied to a chair in a dark warehouse.
He told my son that the massive debt was now due immediately since Vanessa had stolen the cash.
Volkov laughed deeply and made a terrifying promise to my broken son.
He promised Victor that if the ten million dollars was not delivered in one hour, he would start mailing his mother back to him in small wooden boxes.
Victor dropped the phone onto the marble floor as his vision blurred with desperate tears.
He suddenly realized that his arrogant actions had just signed his own mother's death warrant.

The battery on his phone died, cutting off the chilling sound of the mobster's cruel laughter.
Victor was trapped in a cold, empty house with no money, no wife, and absolutely no way out of the nightmare he created.
