Chapter 5 - The Compass Secret

The truth was that I was not tied to a chair in a dark warehouse at all.

I was sitting quite comfortably across from Volkov in his luxurious private restaurant.

I had willingly handed my phone to the mob boss to test my son's true character.

I listened silently as Victor failed to offer a single sacrifice to save my life.

My son had only cried for his own financial ruin before the phone disconnected.

That pathetic reaction erased the very last drop of maternal mercy remaining in my heart.

I took a sip of my expensive tea and looked Volkov directly in his cold eyes.

I told him I was not going to pay him a single dime of my hard-earned money.

Volkov chuckled darkly and signaled for his armed guards to step closer to our table.

He warned me that nobody walked away from a debt to his syndicate and lived to tell the tale.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my late husband's battered brass compass.

I placed it gently on the white tablecloth directly between our teacups.

I explained that my husband had been a brilliant architect before he passed away.

He had designed the hidden smuggling compartments in Volkov's primary shipping vessels thirty years ago.

Volkov stopped smiling and stared at the antique compass with sudden, intense interest.

I pressed a tiny release valve on the side of the dented brass casing.

The back of the compass popped open to reveal a microscopic digital storage drive.

I told Volkov that this drive contained the exact blueprints to every secret vault his syndicate owned.

I also mentioned that the drive held definitive proof that his own lieutenants were skimming millions from his personal accounts.

Volkov's face turned completely pale as he realized the immense power I held over his entire empire.

I slid the compass back across the table and made my final, non-negotiable demand.

I ordered him to erase Victor's debt entirely and hand over the corrupt lawyer who helped Vanessa.

Volkov nodded slowly and agreed to my terms without a single moment of hesitation.

He picked up his phone and made a call to cancel the immediate hit on my family.

Just as the deal was sealed, my lawyer Thomas burst into the private restaurant breathing heavily.

He ran to my table and yelled that Victor had just been arrested for first-degree murder.
