Chapter 8 - The Breach

I watched my children huddled together on that filthy mattress, and a primal, violently protective rage consumed my entire soul.
I noticed a heavy metal side door that had been left slightly ajar by one of the guards who was smoking a cigarette.
I did not have a weapon, but I knew the layout of these old industrial buildings from my time working construction.
I found the main electrical breaker box mounted on the exterior brick wall.
I grabbed a heavy rock from the ground and smashed the metal lock, exposing the thick wires inside.
I yanked the main power lever down, instantly plunging the massive warehouse into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
I heard the guards shout in confusion from inside the building.
I slipped through the side door, using the darkness as my perfect cover.
I moved silently across the concrete floor, relying entirely on my memory of where the children were sitting.
"Tyler," I whispered as softly as I possibly could.
"Dad?" a tiny, trembling voice replied from the darkness.
I reached out and felt his small hands grab onto my jacket with desperate, frantic strength.
I scooped Emma up into my left arm and held Tyler's hand tightly with my right.
"Do not make a single sound, we are walking out of here right now," I breathed into their ears.
We began moving slowly toward the exit, but one of the guards suddenly ignited a bright tactical flashlight.
The blinding beam of light swept across the floor and landed directly on my face.
"Hey! Stop right there!" the guard yelled, raising his heavy rifle.
Before he could pull the trigger, the massive metal loading doors of the warehouse violently exploded inward.

Two armored police vehicles smashed into the building, their bright red and blue lights illuminating the entire space.
Dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers poured into the room, screaming for the guards to drop their weapons.
