Chapter 2 - The Stolen Savings

I sat alone in my dark kitchen, staring at the glowing screen of my laptop.

The fraudulent wire transfer had wiped out nearly everything Laura and I had saved for the kids' college fund.

I immediately called the fraud department of my bank, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

The representative placed me on a brief hold before returning with a deeply apologetic tone.

"Sir, the transfer was initiated in person at our local branch using a verified power of attorney document," she explained.

My mind raced frantically as I tried to comprehend what she was saying.

I had never signed a power of attorney for anyone in my entire life.

"Who presented this document?" I demanded, my voice shaking with suppressed rage.

"The transaction was authorized by your father, Robert Prescott," the representative confirmed.

He had forged a legal document to steal my money in retaliation for the eviction notice.

I hung up the phone and buried my face in my hands.

Laura walked softly into the kitchen and wrapped her arms around my shoulders.

"We are going to get it back, Jack," she whispered fiercely.

"I am calling the police tomorrow morning to press criminal charges against him," I stated.

But my phone suddenly rang again, displaying Melissa's number on the caller ID.

I answered it, putting the call on speaker so Laura could hear every word.

"You really messed up this time, little brother," Melissa sneered through the speaker.

"If you go to the cops, Dad will tell them you authorized the transfer to pay for my new business venture."

"No one will believe a known liar," I shot back confidently.

"They will when they see the legal documents proving you formally gifted me the deed to the house yesterday," she laughed.
