Chapter 1 - The Reality Check

"No," I said, finishing my sentence with a calmness that surprised even me.

"I am doing this over the fact that my children deserve to be treated like human beings."

Melissa scoffed loudly and crossed her arms over her expensive silk blouse.

"You are being ridiculous and embarrassing yourself in front of the neighbors, Jack."

I did not break eye contact with my sister.

"The only embarrassing thing is living rent-free in a house your brother pays for while treating his kids like stray dogs."

My mother let out a dramatic, high-pitched gasp.

She pressed her hand against her pearl necklace and looked around to see if anyone was listening.

"How dare you speak to us this way after everything we have done for you?" she cried out.

I squeezed Tyler's small hand reassuringly and looked directly at my father.

"I am giving you all exactly thirty days to pack up and vacate this property."

My father's face turned a dangerous shade of crimson.

He stormed toward the front door, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

"You cannot evict us from our own family home!" he yelled.

"It stopped being your home the day I paid off your foreclosure to save you from living on the street," I replied evenly.

I turned my back on them and gently guided my wife and children toward our car.

Laura did not say a single word, but she squeezed my shoulder in silent, absolute solidarity.

We drove away in complete silence, leaving my stunned family standing on the porch.

When we finally pulled into our own driveway, my phone suddenly vibrated with an urgent alert.

It was an automated message from my primary banking institution.

I opened the notification and felt the blood completely drain from my face.

Someone had just initiated a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars out of my savings account.
